London Fields (175 for 9) lost to Strongroom CC (178 for 6) by 4 Wickets
by our debutant correspondent, Adam Graham
The sun baked London Fields of the previous Sunday was but a distant memory as the more traditional early season weather of grey skies and wind returned with force.
The first two or so hours of the game aren't really worth mentioning. When Steve Fernbank turned up what should have been two hours into the London Fields' innings, he would have been pleased to see the Fields were only 5 down. However, play had been delayed by an hour due to StumpGate, with the game only going ahead after a late dash home from Jason Lord to retrieve a spare set (aided by Matt Cowie) with Carl and Will's effort of going to Stoke Newington only resulting in a kid's miniature set…
With the game finally underway, the Fields slipped from 20/0 to 33/4 and then 47/5. There were wickets and catches for traitors/Fielders Alexander and Stacey who were playing for the opposition. A chap wearing beige chinos and black shoes also displayed fielding ability defying his attire, first by running out Arthur and then by catching Taz in successive overs.
Will and Troy then settled the ship admirably with a solid partnership of 68, with Will scoring a decent 30 odd and Troy looking well set for 50 before eventually falling for 40.
The middle and lower resistance continued with Skinner contributing an entertaining 27 and Carl Death smashing 22* in the closing overs as the Fields closed on 175 for 9 off 36 overs. A decent total after a poor start.
The defence of the target began well with Troy and Carl keeping things tight. Troy picked up a couple of early wickets to reduce Strongroom to 20 odd for 2 after 6 overs. At that point another Strongroom-er Sam decided to start hitting fours and sixes, ably supported by the Strongroom captain as the game started to slip away from the Fields.
Either side of drinks, two quick wickets and a direct hit run out from Ryan Dunn, along with a wicket for Chris Skinner, saw Strongroom slip to 6 down with another 40 odd still required for victory. However, the Fields were unable to find another wicket, and Strongroom eventually got home to win by 4 wickets with around 4 overs remaining.London Fields Batting
