Hackney CC (260-9) beat London Fields (142 all out)

In the hastily rearranged league final against Hackney, played out in Walthamstow on a dry and dusty belter, Hackney won a good toss and made 263 batting first. We bowled well without too much luck – Alex T effecting a good run out from the boundary to remove their opener; Hitesh getting a nice c&b to remove the other; Phil snaring their captain Edgar with a beauty, nipping back to remove the off bail; Dhawal claiming two including their grizzled tattoo man LBW to much delight; Rupert earning a stumping and two caught in the deep in the death overs – but some late hitting got Hackney up to probably a par score on that pitch though less than they thought they would make (and need). A few mitigators: Carl sustained an early calf injury meaning we were without his bowling guile to call upon, Teas dislocated a finger (later confirmed fractured) dropping a catch in the deep (hurts less if you take 'em) and Rob injured a finger keeping.

At halfway, however, buoyed by the memory of last year's miraculous chase, the lads were confident of hunting down a gettable total on a still-true pitch. Rob and Al got us off to a solid start before Al had a momentary brain freeze and set off on a kamikaze single only to be sent back and run out with a direct hit. Rob batted well against some fiery and accurate bowling, only to york himself against the part time spin of Edgar, departing stumped just before drinks for a well played 30-odd. Hitesh was unlucky to be triggered LBW when almost middling the thing, then Vijay, playing the captains' innings, was unfortunate to whip one through midwicket only for a fielder to take an absolute worldy of a catch, departing for 20-odd just as he was getting going. Dhawal made a mockery of the increasing run-rate pressure to smite some handsome boundaries but after he fell, and Chrispy twanged a hammy leading to his premature departure, we were in the strife with not many lives. We capitulated pretty cheaply from there, trying to stay up with the rate, with only some late blows from a perennially not out Phil giving us much to cheer at the end. Hackney were deserved winners and given that we had defied them against the odds the previous two seasons it was perhaps only fair of us to let them win this time. Well played all who turned out for the league team this term, it's been a great season with some memorable performances and some lovely wins.
