Friendly Match vs Hackney Umpires CC, Sun 21st July 2019, London Fields

Team Holds Out For Beer

London Fields lost to Hackney Umpires by 6 wickets

by John Manison

After winning the toss and after a combination of poor shot selection, bad luck and lack of DRS, LFCC were 34-4 and looking at ending the game before Troy arrived with the beer.

Paul Holden batted superbly with a mixture of solid defence and some booming drives and pulls to put on 67 with an aggressive Tom 23 and 43 with an equally aggressive Matt Cowie who hit a much needed 33, and with a Turley and Ekblom cameo LFCC finished on a one time unlikely but equally competitive 190

After an early breakthrough at the start of the HUCC innings - a gravity assisted tumbling catch in the gully by Turley off Croft - LFCC were in the game. The next partnership put on 50 with little trouble before some superb fielding from Ekblom at square leg, firing in a throw to Ferny to complete the run out, put us back in the game, especially as Tom then clean bowled their number 4 in the next over.

However, despite some miserly leg spin from Ekblom, their opener exploited the short boundary to blast his way to 98 not out and the winning runs. LFCC take great credit for taking it to the last over but just couldn't quite put the squeeze on when it mattered
